What is a local AI companion?
A local AI companion runs its core model, conversations, voice, and memory on your own computer instead of depending on a remote chat service. Nym is being built as a Windows-first local AI companion with one persistent identity and history.
Will Nym work offline?
The planned core experience will keep working offline after a one-time license activation. Optional model downloads, updates, and future online services may need a connection, but they will not gate access to the local relationship.
Is Nym a subscription?
No. Nym is planned around a perpetual core license: buy a release once and keep using it. Future major upgrades will be optional purchases, not required subscriptions. Exact pricing has not been set.
Where will Nym store conversations and memories?
Meaningful companion data is designed to live in a local, portable product folder on your computer. Memories will be inspectable, correctable, exportable, and deletable. You remain responsible for keeping any backups you want to retain.
What happens if Nym's servers ever go away?
An already activated companion is designed to keep running locally without a server heartbeat. User-controlled backup and memory export tools are also planned so continuity does not depend on an account or company-operated recovery service.
Which local AI models will Nym use?
Nym is evaluating commercially eligible Gemma and Qwen models through llama.cpp. The final model will be selected through full-stack quality and hardware testing. Companion identity and memory are being designed to remain separate from any one model family.
Is Nym an anime AI girlfriend app?
Nym can support romantic companionship and anime-inspired visual styles, but it is not limited to one gender, aesthetic, or novelty character. The product is for adults who value a private, durable relationship with a local AI companion.
When will Nym be available?
Nym is in active development. A launch date will be announced after the local model, memory, voice, safety, and supported hardware experience meet the project's release gates.
